Courses offered by the music department require each candidate to perform on two instruments. 
The standard of Advanced Higher is a minimum of grade 5 Associated Board or equivalent and candidate’s prepare a 15 minute recital on the principal instrument and 10 minutes on their second instrument. This element comprises 60% of the overall grade.
Each candidate must produce 2 compositions, each lasting 1 min 30 secs in order to qualify for a course award.
Candidate’s understanding of musical concepts are examined within an hours listening paper at the end of the course.  This element comprises 40% of the overall grade.
Pupils must write a 1500-2000 word dissertation analysing in depth, contrasting pieces from the candidates chosen instrumental repertoire.
